The Severn Bridge Disaster

Presentation by Mr Paul Barnett
Marine Historian of Friends of Purton

On the 25th of October 1960 two tankers, Wastdale H and Arkendale H, collided with pier 17 of the severn rail bridge collapsing an entire section of the single track, the river became alight with flames from the

fuel the two tankers were carrying, and sadly 5 men lost ther lives, only 3 survived.

The link between lydney and sharpness was destroyed in an instant
.
There is now a memorial on both sides of the river thanks to the friends of Purton to the men

that lost their lives.

Many stories surround the details of what happened that fateful night along with the exceptional

heroic acts of a few men.

It turned out that pier 17 had already been damaged by previous collisions over the years.

The entire bridge was eventually demolished in 1970.

Paul`s talk kept everyone entertained and amused.
It was very interesting for the adult audience as well as the younger audience.

I would highly recommend his talk to anyone young or old.

age 14yrs
